MYTHOLOGY

The constellation of the Sagittario is imagined like a centauro (not to confuse however
with the homonym constellation), that is a figure for the superior half of the human body,
and for that inferior equine. It is r provided of a mantle and arc aimed to the Scorpion
(nobody seems however to find of one mythological relation), while show his abilities of
archer. Some thought such constellation divide between the archer and its arc, others
absolutely confused it with that one, however distinguished, of the Centauro. The star
Alpha Sagittarii, comes called Rukbat or Al-rami, than together they mean in Arab "knee
of the archer". The star to the extreme right of the constellation is Alnasl, in Arab
"the tip" of the arrow. The arc is composed from the stars Kaus ("arc" in Arab) Media,
Kaus Australis and Kaus borealis. A particular consideration deserves the star sigma
Sagittarii, call Nunki, name attributed from the Babylonian and that for they it represented
the sacred city of Eridu on the Euphrates: some consider it the more ancient star name
in use. The story of this constellation is pervade from one sure confusion, provoked from
the union of its ancient sumerica origin with the Greek inheritance. The Greek Eratostene
and Igino saw it like a satirus, one smaller divinity with human looks, but with ears,
legs and tail from a goat. It was Crotus, son of Eufeme, nurse of the nine muse daughters
of Mnemosine and Zeus. He invented the arc and the arrows and was always in company of
the muse that their delighted his ears with melodious songs. The muse was therefore glad
to feel his appreciations that asked to Zeus to put him in eternal in the sky.
