This constellation was founded by the French astronomer Nicolas Louis
de Lacaille to fill some regions almost empty of stars that were not
included in any constellation of the epoch. Its complete name,
in Latin, it was in origin Antlia Pneumatica.
To Machine Pneumatica is not in partnership any classical myth,
because Lacaille interrupted the tradition to give mythological names
to the constellations instead preferring names of tools used in the sciences
and in the technologies.
